Neil Young & Crazy Horse Release Another New Video–“God Save the Queen”
by Lefort in Music
Neil Young and Crazy Horse have released yet another video from their impending album, Americana, which is comprised of covers of old folk songs. The video for God Save the Queen (we’d prefer the Sex Pistols’ song) was released today. Neil starts off sounding a little shaky (if you will) on vocals, but picks up steam as the track plays on. Check it out. It’s prudent they released the video on Memorial Day weekend as opposed to Independence Day. …..and her fascist regime!!!

Kids Will Lift You and Your Car Up–Walk the Moon and The Kids of PS 22
by Lefort in Music
When you need it most, kids will lift you up (along with your car?). Heading into the gravitas of Memorial Day weekend, check out this video of Walk The Moon and a great group of choir kids from a public school (you can learn more about them at PS 22) singing Walk the Moon’s song I Can Lift a Car with gusto (via the fine music blog I Am Fuel You Are Friends). The video is a great lead-in to letting you know that Walk the Moon is playing UCSB next Thursday (May 31st) at the Hub. After check out the kids singing Walk the Moon’s wonderful Anna Sun song, followed by the first Walk the Moon video that dominated our screens. There. Feel better?

Watch Charles Bradley’s Show in Paris
by Lefort in Music
And in this corner, weighing in at full-tilt and swingin’ heavy, a man from the shadows of a past, a man back home from a journey and scrapin’ to live (with his mother last we heard), a man of thanks and praise despite the smite, a man the world is facin’ and embracin’, a man channeling the ghosts of Otis and James but with his own irrepressible imprint–this man, they call Charles Bradley. If you missed his highly inspirational show at Soho last year (or not), check Charles out performing in April’s showers at La Cigalle in Paris courtesy of La Blogotheque. And as they say, watch as he lifts mountains. Love that man.

The Afghan Wigs Reunited and Performing on The Jimmy Fallon Show
by Lefort in Music
A war or two in Afghanistan after their seminal 1993 album Gentlemen, The Afghan Whigs are reuniting and touring. Last night they appeared on The Jimmy Fallon Show, making their first public appearance in 13 years. Check out the band performing See and Don’t See (a cover of the Mary “Queenie” Lyons song) along with raging web exclusive, I’m Her Slave (off of their 1992 album, Congregation). ?uestlove and a satchel of string players assisted on the former. Check ’em out and catch ’em live. When last we saw them (in 1993), they blew the roof off at Slim’s in San Francisco, and there’s no reason to doubt they will slay again on this tour. All things considered, the band and (in particular) Greg Dulli lookin’ and soundin’ great.

Watch Hospitality Cover Steely Dan on A.V. Undercover–Coming to Santa Barbara
by Lefort in Music
Brooklyn’s Hospitality showed up on A.V. Undercover to tally their take on Steely Dan’s Riki Don’t Lose That Number (we fondly remember–like it was yesterday–the Dan’s dual-drummer, Skunk Baxter-led performance of it at UCSB’s Robertson Gym on June 23, 1974). The band told the A.V. Club that this was the first cover song Hospitality ever learned. We agree with the A.V. Club who said, “I think they nailed it, adding a bit of…chug and rubbing a bit of rock dirt on such a pristine original.”
Check out Hospitality’s take on Riki Don’t Lose That Number below. We love Amber Papini’s off-kilter vocals (akin to Exene Cervenka/Patti Smith). Check out the accomplished playing and in particular the guitar-solo at 3:23. Hospitality’s debut self-titled debut album has been receiving critical raves, and you can stream/buy it HERE.
Hospitality has also been reportedly winning fans over while on tour with Wild Flag and Here We Go Magic, among others. They are coming to Velvet Jones with Electric Guest in Santa Barbara on June 2nd. Be there. The rest of their tour dates are below the cover.

Watch Gary Numan Perform “Are Friends Electric?” and New Songs on AllSaints
by Lefort in Music
Back in the day, we played Gary Numan + Tubeway Army’s records to death, and especially Replicas (which is to this day one of our all-time faves) before he released his smash hit album The Pleasure Principle (with mega-hit song, Cars). With his synthesizers and effects, Numan was one of the true pioneers of modern electronic music. We’ll pass on his religious and political views, but give him his musical due.
AllSaints Basement Sessions recently captured Numan and crack-band performing three songs in a live session. The performances were evidently shot in a secret World War II air raid shelter in East London. Check out below a scintillating rendering of Are Friends Electric?, followed by the title track off of last year’s Dead Son Rising album and The Fall.

Stream Like Pioneers’ New Album
by Lefort in Music
Amongst our favorite songs of 2010 was Chicago quintet Like Pioneers‘ song Crop Circle Plus Legs off of their debut recording, Piecemeal. Today the band released their sophomore album, Oh, Magic, via Abandoned Love. Check out the new album, currently streaming on Bandcamp as can be heard below. We’ve taken a couple of spins and really like what we hear so far. Fans of The Replacements and REM, pay attention. We’ll break it down in more detail later.

Watch Polica on WFUV’s “Alternate Side” and NPR
by Lefort in Music
KEXP just released a variety of video vignettes of the band Real Estate performing live at the Neptune Theater in Seattle last month. We checked ’em all out in hopes of posting accolades (their latest record is much-loved by people we respect). But after giving ’em their due, these videos only confirm the conclusion we drew a couple years ago after catching the band locally: while they make pleasant-sounding jangle-pop records, there remains no ostensible reason to spend any time or money to see the band live. They make a pleasant sound, but don’t better the records, and completely lack any energy, dynamism, tension or stage-presence to bring the songs to life. Check the KEXP videos if you don’t believe us. Paint. Drying. You’ve been warned.
In stark contrast (yes, a long precis to the main point) is the surging, Justin Vernon-tapped Minneapolis band, Polica. They have a much-lauded new album entitled Give You The Ghost, and we loved their performance on the Jimmy Fallon Show last month. Now check out their riveting performance of Lay Your Cards Out on WFUV’s “Altnernate Side” show. Who can take their ears off of lead singer Channy Leaneagh (of band Gayngs)? The sound and mood draw you in immediately. Leaneagh demands that cards be layed on the table. And the song propels along beseechingly, intermittently punctuated by the stellar stoccato-drumming of Ben Ivascu. Great stuff that warrants repeated listens/viewings. Check it out below. After is an added 30-minute vignette of the band performing at this year’s SXSW courtesy of NPR. We find ourselves in a Polica state.
